Joseph Milligan was the eldest child of Joseph and Margaret Milligan. Joseph Milligan married Margaret Magill on 26th October 1888 in the district of Magherafelt.

The 1911 census lists Joseph as age 21 living with the family at house 58 in Rainey, Magherafelt, Londonderry. His father and both surviving sons were shoemakers.
Joseph Milligan enlisted on 14th November 1914, and was deployed to France in October 1915.

Private Joseph Milligan was home on leave in December 1916 and it was noted then that he was with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

Private Joseph Milligan, Rainey Street, is home on leave. He belongs to the 10th Inniskillings.
Private Joseph Milligan was serving with the 27th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was discharged on 24th October 1918 due to wounds (SWB No 508908).
Joseph Milligan died at home from those wounds on 3rd December 1918. He was 29 years old.
Private Joseph Milligan is buried in St Swithin’s Church Of Ireland, Magherafelt.
The CWGC record Private J Milligan as the son of Joseph and Margaret Milligan of Magherafelt, Co. Londonderry.
