Summary
Joseph Bamford was the son of Joseph and Margaret Bamford. He was born on 5th January 1894 in Kilrea. He was the only son and youngest of five children. The family had a drapers shop in Kilrea. Prior to the war, Joe worked for J B Ferguson Ltd in Belfast. He was posted to Commander Locker-Lampson's Armoured Car Squadron and served with that unit in Belgium. He was later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and became a pilot. On 20th August 1917, Joe was reported as missing, believed killed. As Lieutenant Bamford’s plane fell behind enemy lines, he was buried by the Germans. In 1921, his body was later exhumed and reburied in the Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
The Cemetery is on the northern outskirts of Thessalonika, it lies on the west side of the road to Serres, Langada Street, adjoining the Roman Catholic, French and Italian War Cemeteries.
